First Impressions

Phnom Penh sits at the confluence of the Mekong and Tonlé Sap rivers, giving it a waterfront character unlike most Southeast Asian capitals. The city moves fast, but its riverside promenade offers an easy escape.

Must-See Sights

The Royal Palace & Silver Pagoda

The working royal compound is open to visitors each morning. The Silver Pagoda inside houses a life-sized gold Buddha set with thousands of diamonds.

Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum (S-21)

A sobering but essential visit to understand Cambodia's modern history. Allow 2 hours and plan an emotionally considered schedule around it.

Central Market (Psah Thmei)

The art deco yellow dome is one of the city's most iconic landmarks. Browse jewellery, clothing, souvenirs, and fresh produce.

Neighbourhoods Worth Exploring

  • BKK1 — cafés, restaurants, and boutiques popular with expats
  • Riverside — sunset drinks and tourist restaurants along the Sisowath Quay
  • Russian Market area — cheaper, more local, excellent street food

Getting Around

Inside the city, most visitors use PassApp or Grab for tuk-tuks and cars. For day trips to the Killing Fields (Choeung Ek), a private car is the easiest option — around 30 minutes each way.
