The Golden Rule: Pack Half of What You Think You Need

Seasoned travellers in Southeast Asia repeat this advice constantly — and they're right. Laundry services are cheap and available almost everywhere.

Essentials for Road Trips

In Your Day Bag (Always Accessible)

  • Water bottle — at least 1 litre; refill at stops
  • Snacks — energy bars, nuts, dried fruit
  • Headphones — noise-cancelling if possible
  • Phone charger and power bank — Tap vehicles have USB charging, but a backup is useful
  • Light layer — vehicles are air-conditioned and can get cold on longer journeys
  • Motion sickness tablets — some routes have winding sections

Documents to Keep on You

  • Passport or ID
  • Visa (if applicable)
  • Hotel booking confirmation
  • Emergency contact card (local SIM number + hotel address in Khmer)

What You Don't Need

  • Heavy rain jacket — a compact travel umbrella or thin poncho is enough
  • Excessive formal clothing — Cambodia is casual almost everywhere
  • Padlocks for luggage — your bags are in the vehicle with you

Buying on the Road

Markets in provincial towns stock most toiletries and basic clothing. Don't overpack — if you forget something, you can almost certainly find it.
